Marina Tabassum (TIME100 Most Influential People of 2024): A Journey of Architectural Excellence from Bangladesh & for Bangladesh.

Marina Tabassum, born in 1968 or 19691, is a name that resonates with architectural brilliance and sustainable design in the global arena. This Bangladeshi architect's journey from her early days in Dhaka to being recognized as one of the TIME100 Most Influential People of 2024 is a testament to her dedication, innovation, and impact.

Early Life and Education

Tabassum's family migrated to Dhaka, Bangladesh from India during the partition of Bengal in 1947. She attended Holy Cross Girls School and College, and later graduated in architecture from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 1994.

Career Beginnings

In 1995, Tabassum co-founded URBANA, an architecture practice based in Dhaka, with Kashef Chowdhury1. For about ten years, the firm designed a number of notable projects. However, Tabassum's vision led her to establish her own practice, Marina Tabassum Architects (MTA), in 2005.

A New Architectural Language

MTA began its journey in the quest of establishing a language of architecture that is contemporary to the world yet rooted to the place. The firm stands against the global pressure of consumer architecture, a fast breed of buildings that are out of place and context. MTA's work is well regarded in the world as environmentally conscious, socially responsible, historically and culturally appropriate.

Notable Works and Recognition

One of Tabassum's most acclaimed works is the Bait Ur Rouf Mosque in Dhaka, completed in 2012. In 2016, this project was shortlisted for the Aga Khan Award, and she won the award for its design. Her other notable works include the Museum of Independence, A5 Residence, Comfort Reverie, Vacation House at Faridabad, and Panigram Eco Resort and Spa.

Tabassum's dedication to sustainable architecture and community-oriented design has earned her global recognition. In 2020, Prospect listed her as the third-greatest thinker for the COVID-19 era1. She was also the first South Asian to receive the "Lisbon Triennale Lifetime Achievement Award" in 2022.

Conclusion

Marina Tabassum's journey is a beacon of inspiration for architects worldwide. Her work diverges from conventional commercialism, prioritizing the fulfillment of local communities' needs. Her placement on the TIME100 Most Influential People of 2024 list is a well-deserved recognition of her contributions to architecture and society. As we look forward to her future endeavors, one thing is certain - Marina Tabassum will continue to shape the world of architecture with her innovative and sustainable designs.
